From its beginnings as a humble settlement along the Susquehanna River, Harrisburg’s history is intertwined with Pennsylvania’s growth. The area was first settled in 1719 by John Harris Sr., and in 1791 the borough of Harrisburg was incorporated; by 1812, its strategic river location prompted the state legislature to designate it as Pennsylvania’s capital.
Throughout the 19th century, the city flourished as a transportation and industrial powerhouse following the construction of the Pennsylvania Canal in 1834 and later the Pennsylvania Railroad, which fueled growth in steel, iron, and machine works. During the Civil War, Camp Curtin in Harrisburg served as the Union Army’s largest training ground, and Confederate forces made two unsuccessful advances on the city. In the early 20th century, the City Beautiful movement reshaped Harrisburg with monumental public works, including Riverfront and Reservoir Parks designed to beautify the capital and improve civic life.
Later, the mid-20th century saw industrial decline and suburbanization, but revitalization efforts under Mayor Stephen Reed during the late 20th and early 21st centuries spurred cultural, economic, and infrastructural renewal. Since 1917, the city has celebrated agriculture each January with the Pennsylvania Farm Show—America’s largest indoor agricultural exposition—held at the Farm Show Complex & Expo Center. In March 1979, the partial meltdown at Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station, located just south of Harrisburg, prompted large-scale evacuations and remains a pivotal moment in the region’s modern history.
